Houghton Community Celebrates First Patronal Feast as a Parish

The parishioners of Saints Sergius and Herman of Valaam in Houghton, Michigan, recently celebrated their patronal feast in great reverence with the assistance of Archpriest Michael Carney who visited from his parish of St Herman of Alaska in Lake Odessa, Michigan. On the morning of 9/23 (9/10 os) before the festal vigil, the joy was increased as the parish received a family of five into Orthodoxy. Archpriest Michael provided his very fine voice for the baptismal service as Chad, Olga, Lydia, Margaret, and Penelope were received. Archpriest Michael served the vigil with Priest Benjamin and the Divine Liturgy the following morning. The faithful then processed with the cross and the icon of the beloved saints before completing the service and enjoying the festal meal. The parish extends its gratitude to Archpriest Michael and to his dear wife Darya as well as Deacon Elias and the parishioners of St Herman’s who so generously accepted reader services to permit him to attend the festal celebrations. Furthermore, the parishioners ask that their newly illumined be remembered in the prayers of the broader Orthodox community.
