Feast of Pokrov at the Cathedral

Chicago, October 1/14, 2013.

The Cathedral celebrated its patronal feast day of the Protection of the Mother of God on a clear crisp early autumn day with a great number of diocesan clergy, visitors and parishioners.  Many immediately took note of the new chandeliers from Sofrino that were hung just a week before and which adorn the cathedral in a striking fashion.

During the Little Entrance, His Grace, Bishop Peter awarded V. Rev. Vasyl Kuzmich and V. Rev. Christopher Stade the rite to wear a palitsa; Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov with a kamilavka; and Deacons Nickolai Pravitsky and Ioann Feloniuk with a double orarion.   Following “Meet it is”, Bishop Peter elevated reader Benigno Pardo to the rank of Deacon.  Newly ordained Fr. Benigno will be elevated to the rank of priesthood on Oct 20 at St. Jonah’s in Houston on its patronal feast day where he will assist Fr. John Whiteford in ministering to the Spanish speaking population of the area.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a moleben and procession with the Cross was served.  Stopping at each of the four corners of the church, the people were blessed with the cross, the festal icon and an icon of St. Roman the melodist whose memory was also celebrated on this day.  Upon returning to the church, “Many Years” was intoned to the Hierarchs of the Church, to the Director of the Pontifical choir and all singers in honor of the feast day of their heavenly intercessor, and to the parishioners and supplicators of the cathedral.  A festal banquet prepared by the Sisterhood was served in the elegantly decorated parish hall to a near-capacity crowd of visitors and parishioners.  Glory be to God in all things!
