2013 Diocesan Choir Conference

The Liturgical Music Committee of the Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America, with the blessing of His Grace, Bishop Peter of Cleveland, is pleased to announce the 2013 Liturgical Music Seminar, “Let Every Breath Praise the Lord!,”  which will take place June 14-16, 2013, in Cleveland (Parma), Ohio, at St. Sergius Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

A variety of topics have been selected in order to help the choirs of our diocese including:

• What to Do if Suddenly YOU Are the New Choir Director?
• Crash Course in Typicon
• Voicing for the Smaller Choir
• Reading in Church:  An Essential Component to Prayerfulness
• Becoming a More Musical Church Musician
• The Cure for the Uncommon Choir

Presenters and conductors include Deacon Alexander Petrovsky of Wheaton, IL; Dr. Kurt Sander of Cincinnati; Dr. Sergey Furmanov of Chicago; Carol Surgant of St Louis; Jared Brewer, chairperson of the Eastern American Diocese Liturgical Music Committee; and Larissa Sander, Chairperson of the Committee.

This is a wonderful opportunity for church musicians in our diocese to come together in fellowship and prayer.  We encourage musicians of all levels to attend.  In addition, this year the seminar will be open to teens, as long as they are accompanied by their parent(s).  While there will be a separate program for the teens, they will have the opportunity to join in with the adult choir for the Divine Services.  Due to space limitations, we are limiting the number of teens to 10, and we ask that all teenage participants be able to read music and be prepared to fully participate in all seminar activities.

Since this is a comprehensive conference culminating in the celebration of the All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy, it is requested that all participants stay for the duration of the weekend. The goal is to apply concepts learned during the course of the seminar in rehearsals and in the chanting of the services.  We are honored that Bishop Peter will be officiating the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral on Sunday morning.  Please note that both English and Church Slavonic will be used during the Divine Services, in order to best serve the needs of our bilingual diocese.

Work will begin on Friday morning, June 14, at 8:30, and conclude after the luncheon after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday.  Please note that limited space is available, and therefore we encourage anyone who is interested to register early!

At a low registration fee of $120, we have attempted to make this seminar as cost-effective as possible.  All meals, with the exception of the dinner on Friday evening, as well as music and other materials, are included in this fee. A special group rate at Comfort Inn & Suites, very close to the Cathedral has been secured for those needing lodging.
