Divine Liturgy served at the Ohio Veterans Home - Sandusky, OH
In October, 2010, St Tikhon Orthodox Church received a request from an Orthodox resident of the Ohio Veterans Home (OVH) in Sandusky, Ohio asking the mission parish to hold Orthodox Church services there. Many OVH Orthodox veterans had not attended Orthodox Church services since residing there. In recent memory, no Orthodox service has been held at Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.
In 1886, the Ohio General Assembly authorized the creation of the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, the predecessor of the Ohio Veterans Home, at Sandusky, Ohio. The home was created to provide for Ohio's indigent honorably discharged veterans of the American Civil War.
On November 19, 1888, the first seventeen Civil War veterans arrived at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Home. Beginning in 1950, the institution also provided nursing home care.
On January 30, 2010, the first Orthodox Divine Liturgy was celebrated at Ohio Veterans Home. Father Seraphim Wing, pastor of St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Edinboro, PA was celebrant and Matushka Stacy provided the beautiful choir. Including ten Orthodox veterans, about thirty five people were in attendance. Many received Confession and partook of the Holy Mysteries for the first time in many years. Following the service people expressed their gratitude to be able to attend Liturgy again, and some veterans said they would immediately return to their apartments to mediate and reflect on their holy experience.
OVH Chaplain Birmingham asked St Tikhon’s to return to Ohio Veterans Home to celebrate Orthodox services, and to consider future Orthodox Faith and Bible study classes.
