The Dormition of the Mother of God is always a long-awaited and special Holy day for the Orthodox community of Greater Detroit. For 98 years, the Dormition Cathedral has been the center of Russian-speaking Orthodox life. Throughout its long history, our Cathedral has nurtured generations of Orthodox youth and has been a cherished spiritual place where thousands of people prayed, were blessed with strength, and grew in faith.
The 2026 Patronal Feast was marked by the first visit of Bishop Spyridon, who, by God’s will and the decision of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, was appointed to our Chicago and Mid-American Diocese this year. The Cathedral parishioners joyfully and enthusiastically prepared for the Feast and the Bishop's first visit. As is the tradition in our Cathedral, the Bishop was greeted by the church warden (starosta) Alexander Myasnikov at the entrance to the church before the All-Night Vigil. The Bishop blessed the clergy with the Cross, and as the choir sang the festive Troparion, he proceeded to the Holy Altar, where on the Holy Throne the Shroud of the Mother of God had been prepared.
The beautiful Shroud was ordered for our Cathedral about two years ago. The amazingly delicate iconography and intricate embroidery make many believers pause reverently for a moment before the gentle image of the Queen of Heaven, bowing and kissing the Holy Image with awe and tenderness. This remarkable work was made in Sergiev Posad — an ancient Orthodox center of Russia — and was purchased with donations from a devout family of our Cathedral.
The Honest Shroud of the Mother of God was carried by the clergy to the center of the church at the beginning of the polyeleos and placed on a special tomb. The Holy Image and the entire church were decorated with many flowers — thanks to the efforts of the sisters-decorators of the cathedral Olesya Abramova, Irina Myasnikova, and Olimpiada Reshchikova-Richter.
The Cathedral Choir solemnly sang 'Praise the Name of the Lord...!' under the direction of the choir leader Marlene Brand (Fedorchak), with the participation of many singers, including the choristers from the St. Vladimir parish in Dexter. The final Festal Magnification was sung by the men's choir in front of the Shroud together with the rector, while the stichera according to the Gospel was tenderly performed by a female trio in the center of the church.
I especially want to mention the clergy from various parishes who gathered for the liturgy and served together in honor of the Dormition in our cathedral. Bishop Spyridon was served alongside by:
Archpriest Gregory Joyce — rector of St. Vladimir Church, Dexter, MI
Archpriest Mikhail Volzhansky — rector of the Assumption Cathedral, Ferndale, MI
Archpriest Lev Kopistiansky — cleric of the Trinity Church of the American Church, Detroit, MI
Priest Alexander Lukashonok — rector of the Transfiguration Church of the American Church, Livonia, MI
Priest Joshua Genig — rector of the Church of St. Innocent of Irkutsk, Moscow Patriarchate, Redford, MI
Priest Antony Alekseenko — cleric of the Chicago and Mid-American Diocese of the ROCOR
Priest John York — rector of the Trinity Church of the American Church, Detroit, MI
Priest Colin Bower — cleric of St. Vladimir Church, Dexter, MI
Priest Vladimir Pirozhenko — cleric of St. Vladimir Church, Dexter, MI
And also the diaconal rank:
Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov — cleric of the Protection Cathedral, Des Plaines, IL
Protodeacon Ioann Feloniuk — cleric of the Assumption Cathedral, Ferndale, MI
Protodeacon Iosif Appling — cleric of the Serbian Orthodox Church
Deacon Dimitry Kashchenko — cleric of St. Vladimir Church, Dexter, MI
Deacon Alexey Wilson — cleric of the Assumption Cathedral, Ferndale, MI
It’s also worth noting the experienced service of the cathedral’s church servers:
Subdeacon Mark Alekseev Subdeacon
Alexander Ignatiev
Archimandrite Pachomy Belkov and Hierodeacon Theophan from the St. Sava Monastery, Harper Woods, MI, also attended the liturgy.
Bishop Spyridon gave a sermon about the Feast, noting that the day of the Dormition of the Mother of God, like the day of the passing of any believer, is a day of hope and joy. The Bishop urged all believers to humbly follow God's will, as the Most Pure One did, and encouraged the parishioners of the Cathedral to always gather in the church for communal prayer and to be in unity and love.
Following, a procession around the church was held in honor of the Lady of Heaven, and upon returning to the church, everyone together tenderly sang the prayer to the Mother of God, 'My Most Gracious Queen...'. After the service, the Bishop presented a certificate to Alexander Nikolaevich Chechilov, who has been serving in our parish for over 15 years as a bell ringer, singer, and reader. Alexander also cleans the church weekly and regularly touches up and repairs the building. Then Protodeacon Alexander majestically led the 'Many Years' acclamation, and after a group photo, everyone went to the dining hall.
The festive meal was prepared by many parishioners under the guidance of the head sister Alla Kotomtseva. The joy of the feast continued at the meal, where old Russian songs were sung to the guitar and balalaika.
Heartfelt thanks and deep respect to Bishop Spyridon, the clergy, the choir, and everyone who prayed and took part in glorifying the Mother of God on Her Dormition Feast Day at our Cathedral.

Ferndale
Dexter, MI
Ferndale, MI
Detroit, MI
Livonia, MI
Redford, MI

Detroit, MI
Dexter, MI
Dexter, MI
Des Plaines, IL
Ferndale, MI
Dexter, MI
Ferndale, MI
Harper Woods, MI.
