Lesser Blessing of the new St. Basil the Great Church in St. Louis

Years of dedicated prayer, a full year of overcoming construction challenges and God’s rich blessings have come to fruition when Bishop Peter blessed the beautiful new building that is home to St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church in St. Louis.

His Grace, Bishop Peter and Protodeacon Alexander Kichakov made the journey from Chicago for the Rite of the Lesser Blessing on Saturday, September 5th, 2015 and also to celebrate the first Divine Liturgy in the new church building the next day.

The official opening celebration of the church will be held on January 14, 2015 – the feast day of St. Basil the Great – when the church will be substantially complete.

The historical event was the culmination of months of planning and it all came down to making it happen in just one week. Parishioners joined together to move everything from the old building that was home to St Basil the Great for over 25 years over to the new church, located a I-270 and Dougherty Ferry Road in Des Peres. In fact, the move was so well coordinated and efficient no services were missed. Church life didn’t miss a beat!

This is just Phase 1 for the parishioners of St. Basil. The iconostasis will be in place by the end of September and, as funds are raised, the iconography to adorn the church walls and ceiling as well as a church hall is to be completed.

A special moment occurred during the meal that was served following the dedication, when Bishop Peter reflected on how much this church building reminds him of the new church built in Sura, Russia that is home to St. John of Kronstadt. Thanks be to God!
